Geography: Big Ideas

Mental models for A-Level Geography and IB DP Geography.

This Gocademy collection teaches Geography through the ideas that make the subject coherent. It develops eight mental models — physical systems and dynamic equilibrium, landscape as palimpsest, hazard and vulnerability, place production, structural development, demographic transition, core-periphery dynamics, and scale dependency — and shows how they connect into a unified framework for analysing any geographical problem. Suitable for learners following A-Level Geography or IB DP Geography programmes. All examples, quizzes, and practice questions are original.

What Produces the Patterns on the Earth's Surface?

Geography tends to reach learners in two halves. One half covers rivers, coasts, glaciers and tectonic hazards; the other covers cities, migration, development and global inequalit…

Modules in this Collection’s System

One session. One clear takeaway. Each short session develops one distinct idea with a clear takeaway. Together, the sessions show how those ideas connect into a structured understanding of the topic.

The Eight Big Ideas

How physical systems, landscape history, hazard, place, development, population, core and periphery, and scale explain the world.

What You'll Walk Away With

8mental models connecting physical systems, landscape inheritance, hazard and vulnerability, place production, structural development, demographic transition, core-periphery dynamics, and scale dependency
3thinking-error diagnostics for the most consistent analytical mistakes in Geography
1expert question chain of five questions applicable to any geographical problem
10synthesis claims reviewing the whole subject as a connected and coherent analytical framework

You'll Have Answers To

?Why does a landscape look the way it does — and how much of what you see was made by processes that no longer exist?
?Why does the same physical event kill thousands in one country and dozens in another?
?What does it actually mean to say a place has a character — and can that character change?
?If all countries are trying to develop, why do the gaps between rich and poor keep widening?
?Does scale matter in geography — and if the same data give different answers at different scales, which answer is right?

Editor's Note

“A structural Geography guide that connects physical systems, human geography, and methodology through eight durable mental models.”

This collection is useful because it does not reduce Geography to a catalogue of physical processes and human geography case studies. It gives learners the mental models — dynamic equilibrium, palimpsest, hazard-vulnerability, place production, structural development, demographic transition, core-periphery, and scale dependency — that explain why geographical patterns are the way they are, not just what they look like.

Editor's Brief

Who it's for: Geography learners following A-Level or IB DP programmes who want the subject to feel like a coherent intellectual discipline rather than a disconnected collection of physical processes, human geography topics, and case studies.
What stands out: The collection builds from physical systems and landscape inheritance through hazard and vulnerability, place production, structural development, demographic transition, core-periphery dynamics, and scale dependency — showing at each step how systems thinking, structural analysis, and scale awareness apply across the physical-human divide.
Read if: Read if you can describe geographical patterns but struggle to explain the structural processes that produce them, find physical and human geography disconnected, or want to understand what distinguishes expert geographical analysis from competent description.

Gold Quotes

Geography becomes coherent when you stop treating its physical and human halves as separate subjects and start recognising them as different expressions of the same fundamental question: how are patterns on the Earth's surface produced, and through what processes do they change?

The collection builds eight mental models that hold the subject together — from dynamic equilibrium and palimpsest in physical geography through place production, structural development, and core-periphery dynamics in human geography — showing at each step how systems thinking, structural analysis, and scale dependency apply across the discipline.

No earthquake has ever killed anyone. Buildings kill people. The moment you understand that distinction, the entire framework of disaster risk changes — from managing nature to managing the political and economic conditions that make populations vulnerable.

The Chile-Haiti comparison — two earthquakes within weeks of each other, orders of magnitude apart in death toll — is the clearest demonstration that disaster outcomes are modifiable through governance and investment. Vulnerability is constructed, and what is constructed can be changed.

Underdevelopment is not an original condition — it is something that happened, and continues to happen, through specific trade relationships, financial architectures, and colonial legacies. The development ladder is not wrong in the way a bad map is wrong. It is wrong in the way a false frame is wrong — it directs you to look in the wrong place for the explanation.

Dependency theory and world-systems analysis replace the ladder with a structure: rich and poor positions are produced simultaneously by the same global economic system, and changing a country's position requires changing the structural relationships, not just improving internal conditions.
