What You'll Walk Away With

1wildlife life history reference with r/K selection, age-at-first-reproduction, longevity, and reproductive output across major taxonomic groups
1population dynamics toolkit covering survivorship curves, age structure, lambda (population growth rate), and the demographic models for harvest setting
1habitat management decision tree matching wildlife objectives (game species, endangered species, biodiversity, ecosystem services) to specific habitat manipulation strategies
1conservation status framework from IUCN categories through state listing to federal Endangered Species Act protection, with the science underlying each tier
1current issues briefing on chronic wasting disease, climate-driven range shifts, wildlife trade, urban-wildlife conflict, and the conservation policy responses to each

You'll Have Answers To

?Why is habitat the single most powerful predictor of wildlife abundance — and what does habitat improvement actually look like in practice?
?What does minimum viable population analysis (PVA) actually compute, and why is the 50/500 rule a heuristic rather than a threshold?
?How does the Endangered Species Act work, and what does 'recovery' actually require?
?Why has wildlife management shifted from separation toward coexistence — and what does urban-wildlife coexistence require?
?How is climate-driven range shift reshaping wildlife management, and which species are winning vs. losing?

Editor's Note

“Envirothon Wildlife taught with field rigor and policy realism”

This collection covers all 25 Envirothon Wildlife topics across animal biology and adaptations, wildlife ecology, conservation, habitat management, and current issues. Population dynamics get the quantitative treatment, habitat management gets the practical decision rules, and current issues get the policy realism — what state and federal wildlife agencies actually do, and what they actually can't.

Editor's Brief

Who it's for: Envirothon Asia teams preparing for the wildlife station, wildlife biology and ecology students, and any reader wanting a working command of wildlife biology, population management, and conservation.
What stands out: All 25 Envirothon Wildlife topics covered with the rigor competing teams need — animal biology, population dynamics, habitat management, conservation status, and current issues each treated at field-team practical level.
Read if: You need to identify wildlife, interpret population data, prescribe habitat management, and discuss current wildlife issues at the level a competing Envirothon team requires.

Gold Quotes

Habitat is the single most powerful predictor of wildlife abundance. Manipulate cover, food, water, or space at scale, and you reliably change the wildlife community — for better or worse.

Whitetail deer respond to forest edge and early successional habitat; ruffed grouse need young aspen; quail need bunch grass and bare ground. Habitat improvement (prescribed fire, timber harvest, field-edge buffers) has produced measurable increases in target species across decades. Habitat loss produces equivalent declines. This is why land-use change is the dominant driver of wildlife biodiversity globally.

Minimum viable population isn't a threshold — it's a probability distribution. Small populations face inbreeding depression, demographic stochasticity, and Allee effects that compound risk in non-linear ways.

The 50/500 rule (50 effective individuals to avoid inbreeding depression in the short term, 500 to maintain evolutionary potential long-term) is a starting heuristic, not a law. Real MVP analyses use population viability analysis (PVA) software (Vortex, RAMAS) to estimate extinction probability over specified time horizons. The Florida panther population dropped to ~30 individuals in the 1990s before genetic rescue (introducing Texas cougars) and habitat protection began recovery.

Modern wildlife management is increasingly about coexistence rather than separation. Urban deer, suburban coyotes, recolonizing wolves and bears — wildlife and people now share space at scales previous generations never imagined.

White-tailed deer populations in many US states are now larger than at any point in recorded history, thanks to suppressed predation and habitat creation by suburbanization. Eastern coyotes have colonized every state east of the Mississippi within 50 years. Black bears, elk, and increasingly wolves are recolonizing former range. The challenge isn't restoring wildlife — it's learning to coexist with the wildlife restoration has produced.
