NIV Core Process — Advisor Guide

Coaching value creation, CSR, sustainability and scalability into one business plan that holds together.

Students design a venture and produce a business plan. Rather than generating many options and selecting one, students run a comprehensive business analysis and design a single venture that answers every dimension that analysis raises. This guide covers only that core process — the 7 modules that are specific to Business Venture and Innovation — with full review items, coaching points, and borderline cases. Everything a project needs beyond the core process (problem framing, iteration, value and impact, planning, collaboration, reflection, ethics, submission) is identical across all nine tracks and lives in NIM Project Guide — Advisor Edition. Read that once; read this for the track.

What You'll Walk Away With

  • A customer problem statement protocol requiring customer specificity before product design
  • A business model financial grounding template (rough unit economics minimum)
  • A CSR integration test: 'what business decision changed because of this CSR consideration?'
  • A scalability constraint analysis protocol
  • A business plan coherence checklist for advisors to run before submission

You'll Have Answers To

  • ?How do you help a student articulate a customer problem before describing a product?
  • ?What financial grounding is reasonable to require at the high-school venture competition level?
  • ?What coaching questions reveal whether CSR is embedded in business decisions or appended as a section?
  • ?How do you coach scalability analysis without requiring professional financial modeling?
  • ?What coherence checks should advisors run across business plan sections before submission?

Editor's Note
The Business Venture and Innovation core process, separated from the standard every track shares.

Students design a venture and produce a business plan. Rather than generating many options and selecting one, students run a comprehensive business analysis and design a single venture that answers every dimension that analysis raises. This guide covers those 7 modules only — every review item with a coaching point, borderline cases, and the misunderstandings students bring to each step. Pair it with NIM Project Guide — Advisor Edition, which carries the eight sections common to all nine tracks.

Editor's Brief
Who it's for
Advisors coaching Business Venture and Innovation teams — especially advisors who cover more than one track and do not want to re-read the shared standard for each.
What stands out
It is deliberately partial. Only the 7 core-process modules are here, at full depth; the eight track-universal sections are factored out into NIM Project Guide — Advisor Edition so they are learned once and maintained once.
Read if
You are advising a Business Venture and Innovation project and already know the shared standard, or you want the track's method in one short pass. The business model needs numbers, not categories, and the plan must be coherent across all its dimensions.
Gold Quotes
Require a specific customer problem statement before students describe a product. Features without problems are answers to questions nobody asked.

The most common NIV coaching failure is allowing students to describe a product without first establishing the specific customer problem it solves. Advisors who require the problem statement first produce much stronger value propositions.
