NIA Core Process — Advisor Guide

Coaching the campaign: audience, message, channel — and the execution and measurement that decide it.

Students make impact through innovative and effective communication. Communication is the method, not the problem — the underlying problem may be ordinary; what is assessed is whether the communication used to address it was innovative and effective. This guide covers only that core process — the 7 modules that are specific to Communication Innovation — with full review items, coaching points, and borderline cases. Everything a project needs beyond the core process (problem framing, iteration, value and impact, planning, collaboration, reflection, ethics, submission) is identical across all nine tracks and lives in NIM Project Guide — Advisor Edition. Read that once; read this for the track.

Core Process

The 7 steps specific to Communication Innovation, in order.

7Sessions

What You'll Walk Away With

  • An audience investigation protocol with specific questions about information-receiving behaviors and channel preferences
  • A channel selection justification template linking platform choices to audience evidence
  • A pre-deployment measurement plan template
  • An audience feedback session guide for prototype testing
  • A scope-check rubric for advisors to run before students finalize each section

You'll Have Answers To

  • ?How do you help a student move from demographic audience description to behavioral audience evidence?
  • ?What questions reveal whether a student's channel choice is justified or just familiar?
  • ?How do you coach measurement design before a student has deployed their intervention?
  • ?What feedback-gathering approaches are accessible for high-school communication innovation projects?
  • ?How do you catch scope violations between Section A problem framing and Section B intervention design?

Editor's Note
The Communication Innovation core process, separated from the standard every track shares.

Students make impact through innovative and effective communication. Communication is the method, not the problem — the underlying problem may be ordinary; what is assessed is whether the communication used to address it was innovative and effective. This guide covers those 7 modules only — every review item with a coaching point, borderline cases, and the misunderstandings students bring to each step. Pair it with NIM Project Guide — Advisor Edition, which carries the eight sections common to all nine tracks.

Editor's Brief
Who it's for
Advisors coaching Communication Innovation teams — especially advisors who cover more than one track and do not want to re-read the shared standard for each.
What stands out
It is deliberately partial. Only the 7 core-process modules are here, at full depth; the eight track-universal sections are factored out into NIM Project Guide — Advisor Edition so they are learned once and maintained once.
Read if
You are advising a Communication Innovation project and already know the shared standard, or you want the track's method in one short pass. The campaign must actually be run, not planned, and its impact must be measured with metrics decided before deployment.
Gold Quotes
Audience analysis is investigation, not description. Advisors who coach the question 'how does this audience actually receive information?' move students from demographics to insight.

Demographic summaries tell reviewers who the audience is. Behavioral evidence tells them how the communication strategy should be designed. The second is what scores.
