Introduction to Landscape Design

The whole course, rebuilt from the standard textbook into short pieces

A complete pass through landscape design: first why a landscape behaves the way it does — ecology, climate, water and land — then the visual side of it, how a site is read and planned, and finally the things a design is actually made of: spaces, movement, structures and planting. Every part is followed the same way: what the condition is, what it does to a site, how it is read in a survey, and what a designer decides because of it. It is the ground a university course covers, cut down to what carries weight and handed to you one short piece at a time.

Modules in this Collection’s System

One session. One clear takeaway. Each short session develops one distinct idea with a clear takeaway. Together, the sessions show how those ideas connect into a structured understanding of the topic.

What You'll Walk Away With

4site-reading routines that turn a survey and a contour plan into design decisions
5compensation rules that keep ground form, water and vegetation in balance
3visual frameworks for composing a sequence of views across a site
5planting decisions that hold up against soil, climate and maintenance
4scales of open space that link a community plan to a single site

You'll Have Answers To

?Why does the same planting thrive on one side of a wall and die on the other?
?If a site already works without us, why does it need designing at all?
?Where does the water on a site actually go, and who decided that?
?Why is the cheapest-looking layout so often the most expensive to keep?
?When does a view belong to the public rather than to the site?

Editor's Note

“Landscape design taught from the ground up, literally.”

Most introductions to this subject start with composition and add the site later. This one starts with the site — its climate, water and soil — and treats composition as something you earn the right to do afterwards. The result is a course that explains far more design decisions than it appears to.

Editor's Brief

Who it's for: A self-directed learner who wants to design outdoor spaces that hold up, and would rather not work through a professional planning manual to find out how.
What stands out: The course runs in one direction — from the systems a site already has, through how it is read and planned, down to the planting and paving it is finally made of — so the design decisions arrive attached to the conditions that force them.
Read if: Read if you have looked at a public space and could not say why it worked, or why it did not.

Gold Quotes

A site is never blank. By the time you arrive, the climate, the water and the plants have already made most of the decisions.

The useful question is not what can be built here but what the place is already doing. Reading the existing systems first turns an open-ended design problem into a set of constraints that can actually be answered, and the answers tend to age better than the ones invented from scratch.
